Chandrataal

One of the two high-altitude wetlands in India – Chandrataal – or the Lake of the Moon as it translates is situated at a height of 4,300m in the Himalayas. This picturesque lake is flanked by a string of broken rock formations on one side and a cirque (landform) on the other. Adding to the charm of this crescent-shaped lake is its mystique in that it has no visible source or point of origin. A haven for campers and trekkers between May and October who throng this part of Spiti, in Himachal Pradesh, at spring Chandrataal’s vast meadows are carpeted with an array of wildflowers of varying hues. Its resplendence aside, Chandrataal is also a designated Ramsar site adding to its attraction as a tourist destination.

WWF Explorers offers a unique chance to budding trekkers to discover this exquisite landscape and look up-close at the work, WWF-India is doing to conserve its pristine glory. Over the years, due to the steady influx of unmanaged tourist activities and overgrazing of pasturelands, Chandrataal’s biodiversity was facing a severe threat.

Therefore, in consultation with the wildlife wing of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, WWF-India has undertaken several conservation measures by engaging local communities, including schoolchildren and the youth, in conservation-related initiatives and decisions. An action plan for the nomadic communities has been devised, camping and parking sites have, respectively, been shifted 2.5kms and 2kms away from the lake and solid waste management practices have implemented at the camping sites to prevent littering by tourists.

So here is your chance to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Chandrataal! Come join the WWF Explorers as they go on this magical Himalayan adventure.
