JK PAPER - SUSTAINABILITY AT ITS HEART

Company background

JK Paper, a unit of JK Organisation, is India’s largest producer of Branded Papers and is a leading player in Coated Paper and High-End Packaging Boards. With three large, integrated paper manufacturing units in Odisha, Gujarat, and Telangana, we have a total production capacity of 5,95,000 tonnes per annum. We export to 35 countries, and have an extensive distribution network of 200 wholesalers and nearly 4,000 dealers.

Sustainability commitment

We understand that the future of our business and the paper industry depends on ensuring that the source of paper – wood and pulp – is responsibly managed. Therefore, we have a strong commitment to ensure preservation of the environment.

We obtained the FSC Chain of Custody Certification in 2011 and the FSC Forest Management Certification in 2014. This has enabled us to produce paper made from sustainably sourced raw material, as well as manage our own plantations in compliance with the highest sustainability standards. We have nearly 10,000 hectares of FSC certified plantations, and manufacture over 2000 tons of certified paper annually.

We care about forests in India and around the world. Therefore, we have also defined a Controlled Wood policy which ensures we contribute to sustainability of forests and preservation of natural resources by avoiding wood that is harvested illegally, in violation of traditional or civil rights, from forests of high conservation value or plantations set up by converting forest land.

“Our sustainability efforts are inspired by a desire to ensure good forest management, which would help the environment, and also enable uninterrupted supply of raw materials for us, with a carbon positive process. Not only are we FSC certified, we also reforest land as part of our CSR initiatives to give back to nature.”

Impact in Numbers

Our CSR and Sustainability commitment believes “caring and sharing is the essence of ethical enterprise.” Apart from incorporating sustainability into our business practices, we also work towards improving the environment and contributing to society through our CSR initiatives. Till date, we have reforested over 1,50,000 hectares of land in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. At present, we add over 11,000 hectares of land annually to our plantation drives by distributing around 50 million saplings to farmers. We have also signed an Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement (ERPA) with the Bio Carbon Fund of World Bank, covering 3,500 hectares, mainly owned by small and marginal farmers associated with our plantation program. This program provides additional income for participating farmers, besides reducing harmful green-house gases and global warming.

Value of Sustainability

These measures to promote sustainability have positively impacted our brand image and entry into new markets. We have received a good response from global markets in exporting FSC certified products in the packaging and printing segments.
